World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), 21 March, is a global awareness day that has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

The date for WDSD, being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

Why do people with Down syndrome need an international day?

All around the world, people with Down syndrome are treated badly…

  • They are denied a quality education.
  • They are denied good health care.
  • They are denied the chance to work and earn their own money.
  • They are not allowed to make decisions about their own lives.
  • Their voices are not heard!

So, on 21 March we create a single global voice advocating for the rights, inclusion and well-being of people with Down syndrome.

Become a World Down Syndrome Advocate!

Join DSi in our campaign to create a single global voice advocating for the rights, inclusion and well-being of people with Down syndrome.

  • Access to training.
  • Advocacy messages to share.
  • Details of campaigns and activities that you can get involved with.
  • Opportunities to share your own messages and activities to inspire other advocates.

Each year the voices of people with Down syndrome, and those who live and work with them, grow louder.
