We were recently in Dhaka, Bangladesh, training the Down Syndrome Society of Bangladesh.

Over the rest of this year we will be supporting them to start a self-advocacy group for people with Down syndrome.

What we did

We ran a four day training workshop with staff from the Down Syndrome Society of Bangladesh and other organisations working with people with Down syndrome in Bangladesh. The aim of the training was for the participants to develop skills to become effective facilitators of self-advocacy groups for people with Down syndrome.

Over the three days we covered key topics including:

  • Supporting communication and decision making;
  • Developing self-advocates' skills and understanding;
  • Human rights and advocacy;
  • Safeguarding.

At the end of the training we supported the participants to plan a session and practice facilitating a group of people with Down syndrome.

Why is this important?

Many people with Down syndrome in Bangladesh do not have a voice in decisions that affect them and are unable to control how they live their lives. They also face discrimination in their every days lives from other people and service providers.

This project will enable people with Down syndrome in Bangladesh to have an active role in bring about positive change in their lives.
