Becky Penrose, Community Fundraiser South-West UK

After the success of last year’s event in Cornwall, we were thrilled to be chosen again to be charity partners, alongside the Down’s Syndrome Association (UK), for this year’s Glow In The Park event in Devon.

Glow In The Park is a fun night-time 5km run for all of the family. It involves foam, paint, music and lots of neon lights!

The weather as we arrived at the venue, just outside Exeter, to prepare, was rather wet. There had been 3 days of torrential rain in the run up to the big day and we had all our fingers (and toes) crossed that the rain would hold off for the rest of the day.

The Glow In The Park team had been busy and the course was looking fantastic. There was a lovely big merchandise stand and some crazy mirrors with neon lights, where people could take photos of themselves in all their neon glory.

Our crack team of volunteers helped us set up our brand new gazebo (courtesy of a kind donation from The Exeter Lions) and pitched in with the Glow Team to unwrap medals and headbands.

Luckily the rain held off for most of the day but just as participants were starting to arrive, full of colour and excitement, we had a downpour. It did not dampen people’s spirits though! Before the run began I was invited on to stage. I thanked everyone for choosing to raise funds for DSi and DSA. We also invited Alex on stage and 2,000 people sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to him. We also had the support of Snap Fitness, Exeter, who led a fantastic warm up session and promoted their gym.

Once the race started it was an amazing sight…2,000 people with head torches, high viz clothing, fairy lights and more running across the course. As they crossed the finish line, smiling and covered in foam, volunteers presented them with a medal and headband. The music and fun continued in the event arena where there was hot food and drinks available.

A huge number of people with Down syndrome and their families attended the event and had a wonderful time. We are very grateful to Snap Fitness, all our volunteers and of course, all the participants who fundraised for us.

Thank you Glow In The Park, see you again next year!!! Feel free to contact us about the 2019 event at any time.
