As part of DSi's work in healthcare, we are currently collaborating with international clinical experts to create an up-to-date review and expert consensus document on cardiac disease in Down syndrome.

This document will help health professionals around the world to better understand, diagnose, manage and care for people with Down syndrome with cardiac disease. The guidance will highlight best practice, but also acknowledge the differences that may exist between countries around the world.

Better outcomes for people with Down syndrome with cardiovascular disease

In order that this work can be useful and relevant for people with Down syndrome worldwide, a working group made up of 25 leading international specialists in cardiovascular disease and specialists in the treatment of people with Down syndrome, has been established to write and review this work.

In addition DSi has contacted all of our member organisations to put forward similar specialists from their localities, to seek comments on the relevance and importance of the proposed topic areas forming the basis of this document.

International experts and stakeholders

Once the topic areas in cardiovascular disease have been determined, evidence will be sought via a systematic review and a consensus statement for each topic area will be prepared. Provision will be made to address the different issues faced in varying health systems. Where applicable, brief recommendations will be made.

Draft for publication by the end of 2021

The aim is to produce an international consensus document to submit for journal publication before the end of 2020. Once published, we anticipate this document will have a substantial and positive impact on the care provided by health professionals to people with Down syndrome with cardiac disease.
