What is Explore?

Explore is a project that Down Syndrome International and the UK Down's Syndrome Association are working on together.

We are being supported by a charity called CAST and the work is funded by Comic Relief and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.

We have help from self-advocates and Down syndrome organisations around the world.

The challenge

The COVID-19 pandemic has made it difficult to meet in person and around the world people are increasingly having to communicate remotely. This includes people with Down syndrome that want to participate in the work of organisations like DSi and it's members, including DSA.

Participating remotely can be difficult, with many barriers including access to technology, hard to use or inaccessible apps, and a lack of effective support.

How we are helping?

We want to understand more about this issue:

As a person with Down syndrome, when I am working with organisatons remotely, I need clear and accessible communication so I can understand and take part.

We are exploring this issues, aiming to better understand the barriers that people with Down syndrome face when they want to participate in the work of organisations remotely. We have a group of self-advocates and organisation staff that are helping us to research the issue and look at potential solutions for it.

Long-term impact

Our research and explorations of this issue will enable DSi, DSA and other Down syndrome organsiations to better include people with Down syndrome remotely. This will be very useful during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.
