In 2015, the United Nations (UN) member states created the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The 2030 Agenda is a "shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future".

At the heart of the 2030 Agenda are 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's) set to try to make the world better for everyone.

The goals include:

  • Ending poverty and other deprivations;
  • Improving health and education;
  • Reducing inequality;
  • Tackling climate change and preserving our oceans and forests.

HLPF 2021

Each year, the UN holds a High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF).

This is a platform to follow up and review the 2030 Agenda.

For 2021, the HLPF will be held from Tuesday 6th July to Thursday 15 July.

The HLPF will discuss ways to ensure a sustainable and resilient recovery from COVID-19 that puts us on track to realize the 2030 Agenda. The theme will be

"Sustainable and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic that promotes the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development: building an inclusive and effective path for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda in the context of the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development".

Stakeholder Group for Persons with Disabilities

Major groups of the world's population are represented at the HLPF by a 'Stakeholder Group'.

Persons with disabilities are recognised as a distinct Stakeholder Group - the Stakeholder Group of Persons with Disabilities.

This group is led by the International Disability Alliance (IDA) with the support of the International Disability and Development Consortium (IDDC).

Each year the Stakeholder Group of Persons with Disabilities sends a submission around the SDGs and persons with disabilities relating to the theme of the HLPF.

The submission is written with an open consultative process to create a strong statement from various organizations working to promote the rights of persons with disabilities.
