17 January was the second meeting of the recently established self-advocacy group for people with Down syndrome in Lagos, Nigeria. This is part of DSi's project with Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria.

What happened at the meeting?

Self-advocacy groups let people with Down syndrome do the talking, so the group spent lots of time passing the microphone around and letting self-advocates talk.

The group did some role plays about group advocacy and other topics. They talked about how they contribute in their homes.

The self-advocates were happy to receive some new T-shirts to recognise their membership of the group.

Why are self-advocacy groups important?

Self-advocacy groups are a powerful tool for empowering people with Down syndrome by supporting them to have their voices heard. The groups build their confidence to be able to speak out about issues that are important to them.
