Several Pre-Conference Workshops are proposed for attendees:
Communication - Persons with intellectual and communication disabilities: making
communication work. The workshop will introduce participants to the use of pictures to
improve a person's understanding about unfamiliar or difficult events.
Multiple Disability - Persons with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities: The
forgotten citizens of the world. The workshop is to demonstrate ways that will convince
delegates that individuals with PIMD are able to develop, to communicate, to enjoy life, in

South Africa wins bid to host international congress 2012

The Down Syndrome South Africa were recently awarded the right to host the World Congress on Down Syndrome in 2012 by the international body, Down Syndrome International . The National Director of Down Syndrome South Africa, Mrs Vanessa dos Santos presented the submission for the bid at the board meeting in Vancouver in March this year.

Down Syndrome International hosts a World Congress every 3 years with the last one being held in Vancouver, Canada in 2006 and the next one will be in Dublin, Ireland in 2009.

Vanessa dos Santos is the mother of 3 boys, of which the youngest has both Down syndrome and cerebral palsy. She has been involved and passionate about Down syndrome and other disability issues since his birth 13 years ago and is currently the National Director of Down Syndrome South Africa.
