A brief overview of the functional structure of human memory will be presented, followed by a more detailed description of working memory, a system for temporarily holding and manipulating information that is assumed to underpin coherent thought. Particular attention will be given to the phonological loop, a subsystem that is assumed to underpin the acquisition of language. Its operation in Down Syndrome will then be discussed.
