World Down Syndrome Day: Singapore
Down Syndrome International (DSI) has officially earmarked 21, March as World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD). The date was chosen to signify the uniqueness of Down syndrome in the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome and is used synonymously with Down syndrome.
WDSD 2008 Commemorative events will celebrate the achievements and abilities of persons with Down syndrome. We should be confident to “Aim High Enough” [unquote- Dr. John Langdon Down] and yet be Down to Earth in out approach and attitude.
All DSI members and related organizations worldwide are encouraged to observe WDSD together with the community in an appropriate manner; focusing especially on issues related to intellectual disability; trends, ways and means by which persons with Down syndrome are trying to achieve an independent life-style, sustain a livelihood and financial security and aspiring to live a dignified quality life.
A proven way is to plan and organize events (especially exhibitions and performances) to showcase and celebrate the contributions by persons with Down syndrome to the communities they live in. Presentations could focus on the rich and varied skills, interests and aspirations of the persons with Down syndrome.
Simultaneously, it is relevant to advocate for implementation of norms and standards of relevant services and policies to ensure the participation of persons with Down syndrome in an appropriate social environment that will promote their development on the basis of equality.
The media has especially important and effective contributions to make in support of the observance of WDSD, and also throughout the year, by creating public awareness of Down syndrome and their acceptance in societies; especially by promoting positive policies, programmes and projects.
DSI’s official website for WDSD: www.worlddownsyndromeday.org will link, inform and update relevant commemorative events globally.
We earnestly look forward to being ever as creative and informative as in the Inaugural WDSD 2006 and also in 2007 to ensure positive outcomes for this year..
Dr. Balbir Singh
Immediate Past President
Down Syndrome International
Chair, WDSD 2008
