Down Syndrome International is delighted to announce that a resolution to designate 21 March as “World Down Syndrome Day” was adopted by the United Nations on Thursday 10 November 2011.

Rami Ramachandran

Rami Ramachandran (B.Tech Chem.Eng.) lives in Chennai, India with his wife, DSi Board member and Chairperson of the Down’s Syndrome Federation of India Dr Rekha Ramachandran. They have a daughter with Down syndrome.

Rami was an Executive Director of The India Cements Limited from 1994 until 2009, the largest manufacturer of Cement in South India with other interests in sugar, shipping, trading and finance. He is Chairman of Results Estates Pvt. Ltd. which operates in the fields of real estate, shipping and oil and gas, and holds the following other directorships:

• Babli Holdings Pvt. Ltd.
• Birdie Holding (Madras) Pvt. Ltd.
• Results Marine Pvt. Ltd.
• Birdies Estates Pvt. Ltd.
• Babli Estates Pvt. Ltd.

Rami is also the former President of the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), the premier business chamber in Chennai, he is on the Executive Committee of The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India and he is a former Deputy President of The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India.

A keen sportsman, Rami is actively associated with several sports organisations. In his capacity as President of the Indian Triathlon Federation, Rami pioneered, promoted and popularised the comparatively new and grueling sport of Triathlon in India. As Secretary General of the Squash Rackets Federation of India he has been instrumental in making Chennai the “Squash Capital” of India and taking the sport to new peaks of excellence in India. Rami is a Vice President of the Indian Olympic Association and a Vice President of the Tamil Nadu Olympic Association. He was elected President of the World Squash Federation in 2008.

Rami has travelled extensively all over the World in connection with business and sport.
